Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani's fandom was never in doubt but a record-breaking $700 million move last offseason has seen the Japanese slugger reach new heights of popularity.

While his MLB record deal set shockwaves in the baseball community last year, the three-time MVP has become the crown jewel of Japan and its people who were already aware of his talents from his time in the NPB.

Following a record-breaking 50-50 season (50 home runs and 50 steals) Shohei Ohtani was named the unanimous MVP for a third time in his career, first in the National League. He is the first player to record three unanimous titles across the NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB.

To celebrate the landmark Japan Post launched exclusive limited-edition stamps on Friday. The commemorative stamps will be available in post offices across Japan and online shops.

As per reports, it will cost 7,260 yen (RM210) per set, which includes a printed towel and file folder along with five stamps. The towel will feature Ohtani's stats from his historic 2024 season.

Shohei Ohtani gearing up for next season after historic year

Shohei Ohtani played purely as a designated hitter in his first season with the Dodgers as he was restricted from pitching after undergoing elbow surgery last year.

In his restricted role, Ohtani focused on his offense, racking up a record-breaking 59 steals. However, he is expected to return to pitching, showcasing his two-way ability in Dodgers blue.

“The goal is to be ready for opening day and that includes hitting and pitching,” Ohtani said. “But we are kind of taking our time.”

The Dodgers will welcome Ohtani's return to pitching following an injury-riddled season for several arms in their rotation. The Japanese star has now back-to-back MVP wins and is likely to be in and around MVP talks next season. However, if he makes a successful return to pitching, he could be in Cy Young contention as well.

“That would obviously be great (on winning MVP and Cy Young in the same year), but right now my focus is just to get to get back healthy, come back stronger, get back on the mound and show everybody what I can do,” Ohtani said.

Ohtani is expected to join the team in time for spring training despite undergoing shoulder surgery after the World Series.
