For the first time in postseason history, Shohei Ohtani will face the New York Yankees. The NL MVP frontrunner played the Yankees this year as a part of their three-game regular season series. However, when the stakes are high and the chips are down, it would be a whole different atmosphere and ball game.
In his decorated MLB career, Shohei Ohtani has faced the Yankees in 26 games. He has a .209 batting average with nine home runs on 19 base hits, 18 RBIs, and 20 runs scored.
Ohtani opened his scoring against the Yankees on April 27, 2018. The then-rookie with the Angels showed why he was a hyped talent as he hit a solo home run off Luis Severino.
The former AL MVP's most recent bomb against the Yankees was on July 17, 2023. With the Angels down 1-3, Ohtani hit a game-tying blast against Michael King in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Angels would eventually win the game 4-3 courtesy of a Michael Stefanic RBI single.
While Shohei Ohtani's record versus the Yankees during his time with the Angels was respectable, he has yet to establish his mark with the Dodgers as Ohtani only registered one hit and an RBI in two appearances against New York this year.
Shohei Ohtani versus Yankees starting pitching
Heading into the World Series matchup against the New York Yankees, Shohei Ohtani is projected to face Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Carlos Rodon, and Nestor Cortes Jr.
Amongst the five pitchers, Luis Gil is the only one yet to face Ohtani. In Shotime's career, he has faced Gerrit Cole in 21 plate appearances, he currently sports a 4-20 record that includes a home run.
On the other hand, against lefties Rodon and Cortes Jr., Ohtani holds a 1-3 and 2-12 record, respectively.
As a pitcher, Ohtani throws with his right hand. However, he bats with his left. If the Yankees want to have a chance against the Japanese superstar, they should look to exploit his slight struggles against lefties.
In the regular season, Ohtani boasted a .322/.717/1.128 slash line with 42 home runs and 91 RBIs against right-handed pitching. On the other side of the spectrum, he owns a .288/.518/.867 with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs.
