Shohei Ohtani's impending free agency is perhaps the biggest MLB storyline in a long time. There has only been one player like Ohtani and it can be argued that Ohtani does what he does better than how Babe Ruth did it.
As a result, he could end up being the first $500 million man in baseball history. Which team will pay him that? Here are a few options for the two-way superstar's future home.
MLB teams who could pay Shohei Ohtani $500 million or more
5) San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres could be in the market for Shohei Ohtani, especially if they don't re-sign Manny Machado next offseason. They'd suddenly have a lot of money and they've shown they're not afraid to spend. Machado's departure would put a wrinkle on their future, but Ohtani's arrival would smooth that out easily.
4) Los Angeles Angels
The Angels make sense for Ohtani. They know what he does and they obviously love him. Whether or not they want to pay him is another story, but they can't be discounted. LA is his home right now, so they're at least an option. Plus, if they can start to contend, he may want to stick around for the upcoming good seasons.
3) New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are always interested in the biggest free agents and there's no way they won't at least try to get Ohtani. He famously snubbed them when he first came over to the MLB, but money and winning (two things the Yankees are known for) talks.
2) New York Mets
The New York Mets have reportedly already looked into adding Ohtani, so they're clearly gearing up for a run at the two-way star. They have the biggest payroll by far this season and tried to sign Carlos Correa for $325 million on top of that. They have no qualms about spending an absurd amount of money, which is what Shohei Ohtani will get.
1) Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been shockingly quiet this offseason after a brutal postseason. Why? So they can afford Ohtani next offseason. They have a good team, but they really want Ohtani. They're willing to make sacrifices this year to get him, so it's going to be hard to outbid them when the time comes.
