Shohei Ohtani is making waves online just minutes into Wednesday night's game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies. It's not because of a record-breaking shot but a quirky gesture to get some sand off his gloves.
Ohtani led off the game with a single. Then, during the at-bat of Freddie Freeman, the designated hitter ran to steal second base. However, it seemed that Ohtani felt some sand in his glove. So he instantly removed the glove and started shaking it in front of his groin area.
Even though the ESPN broadcast didn't say anything about that gesture, the fans were quick to pick up on it and filled the X with their comment sections.
"He's doing the dollar store special," one fan said.
"Shohei Shuffle," another fan stated.
Many other fans also chimed in with their responses to the strange gesture of Shohei Ohtani mid-game.
One matter-of-fact fan answered Barstool Philly's question straight.
"Shaking the dirt out of his glove. Seems pretty obvious," one fan mentioned.
Meanwhile, another was more creative with their response.
"Airing out his glove because his bat has been so hot," one fan commented.
And of course, there were a couple of fans who couldn't resist referencing the betting scandal involving Ohtani's interpreter.
"Celebrating that the parlay of him having a stolen base paid off," one fan predicted.
"It’s a signal to bet on a parlay," one fan said.
Shohei Ohtani nominated for award at the 2024 ESPYs
After winning his second unanimous MVP award last season, Shohei Ohtani is in the running for an award at the 2024 ESPYs. Ohtani has been put in the category of 'Best Male Athlete' and he's against some great athletes from other sports like the PGA, NHL, and NFL.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, up-and-coming golfer Scottie Scheffler (PGA Tour), and Connor McDavid (NHL) are the ones competing for the same category as Ohtani.
The voting window is quite short. It'll close today at 2 PM PT. The event will take place on Thursday night at the Dolby Theatre. It'll be hosted by the tennis legend, Serena Williams.
Ohtani has already won an ESPYS award in the same category back in 2022. Now, Ohtani seeks to join greats like LeBron James, Lance Armstrong, and Tiger Woods as a multiple-time ESPY winner in this prestigious category.
