MLB fans react to Petco Park going dark during Padres-Athletics showdown

The San Diego Padres brushed aside the Oakland Athletics 6-1 on Sunday to take an early lead in their three-game series. While the Padres offense bounced back from their slump in the previous game, fans reacted to a unique sight during the game at Petco Park.

Fans at the ballpark enjoyed a brief light show when the ballpark suffered a malfunction during the bottom of the seventh inning. Several lights inside the ballpark stopped working abruptly as the players and fans waited in darkness.

However, fans took the moment to create a serenading view as thousands of spectators turned on the flashlights on their phones, participating in singalongs before the lights came back on.

Several fans compared the unique sighting with WWE legend The Undertaker's iconic entrance theme.

"Someone edit it with the undertaker bell."
"The Undertaker influence is crazy," wrote @Navtreaks.
"Someone add in the Undertaker or Bray Wyatt's music, and it's all good," another fan quirked.

Meanwhile, other fans aimed jibes at the franchise for the abrupt stoppage in the game.

"Padres can’t pay their players and electric bills. Trash franchise," wrote a disgruntled fan.
"They can’t even afford their light bill what makes you think they can afford Soto," mocked a fan.
"Front Office: 'WHO FORGOT TO PAY THE POWER BILL?!?,'" quirked @Nate_CameraGuy.

The game resumed after a three-minute stoppage with the bases loaded for the Padres and Athletics pitcher Michel Otanez on the mound hoping to escape the jam.

Padres' Donovan Solano maintains composure to extend team's lead after abrupt stoppage

Padres infielder Donovan Solano, who was at the plate when the lights went off, turned the stoppage in his favor. He extended the home team's lead with an RBI walk off a wild pitch by rookie Otanez.

“That was so rare,” Solano said. “I definitely didn't expect that here. That happened to me in winter ball. … I said, 'Wow, that doesn't happen here.' That's a battle, a 1-2 count. But I was still ready.”

Jackson Merrill's RBI single further extended the lead before Ha-Seong Kim's sacrifice fly rounded off a three-run inning for the Padres. Mike Shildt's team improved their record to 35-35, sitting second in the NL West behind the high-flying Los Angeles Dodgers.

Earlier in the game, star slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. extended his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games with a solo home run, his third in four games. He leads the team with 13 home runs this season.
