Juan Soto and the New York Yankees lost 9-7 against the New York Mets on Tuesday at Citi Field. After losing three consecutive series, they have started the Subway Series with a loss.
The Bronx Bombers are going through a rough patch, especially in June where they have suffered losses with big deficits, including a 17-5 loss against the Baltimore Orioles and a 1-8 loss against the Atlanta Braves.
Discussing their recent loss against the Mets, Yankees outfielder Juan Soto said:
“It’s just part of the game, you know. Sometimes you are going to win, sometimes you are going to lose. We have been playing. We have been aggressive. We scored a couple of runs. It is what it is. It’s part of the game.”
The New York Yankees were trailing the Mets 6-0 through four innings until Juan Soto narrowed the gap in the fifth inning with a solo home run, his 19th of the season, off David Peterson. Soto’s hit traveled 423 feet with an exit velocity of 109.9 mph.
Yankees captain Aaron Judge brought a run in the seventh inning hitting a RBI double. On Austin Wells’s single, Ben Rice scored a run for the Yankees in the eighth inning.
In the same inning, Aaron Judge hit a grand slam with the bases loaded setting the final score of the game. Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole struggled, giving up six runs on seven hits with four walks without any strikeouts in his second start since returning from his injury.
Juan Soto addresses contract situation involving the Mets
Left-handed outfielder Juan Soto was traded to the New York Yankees in December 2023 in a deal with the San Diego Padres. Soto and the Yankees agreed to a one-year contract worth $31 million, avoiding salary arbitration.
The 25-year-old will become a free agent at the end of the 2024 season. When Jon Heyman of the New York Post asked him about the possibility of the New York Mets bidding for him, Soto said:
“We will see. In the offseason we will figure it out. I’ll let [agent Scott Boras] do his thing. We’re going to see.”
When discussing Soto and the Mets, Heyman suggested they could be the 'biggest outside threat' to sign the three-time All-Star.
The two teams will clash again in the rubber game on Wednesday with the series and bragging rights on the line. The Yankees will hope to end their run of three series defeats with a win in the series finale.
