The Seattle Mariners and the New York Mets are looking to sign free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso. There's another player, Luis Castillo, who could satisfy the Mets' need and in hindsight the Mariners free up some money to sign Alonso.
Starting pitcher Castillo, who's a trade target for many teams, including the Mets, looking to add a good arm to their rotation. However, sportscaster Evan Roberts cautioned the Mets to bite the bait. Here's how he put it:
"But here’s the caution with Luis Castillo," Roberts said on Rico Brogna podcast (17:53 onwards). "If the Mets traded for him tomorrow, we’d all be excited, right? At least most of us would be. But you know what the downside of that is? Why are the Mariners trading Luis Castillo? Not because they don’t think he’s good, but because they want to free up money. They could then use that freed-up money to add a bat.
"Now, imagine the Mets take on Luis Castillo’s contract, and the Mariners turn around and make an offer to Pete Alonso. We lose."
Roberts said that the Mets need to weigh the risks of such a deal, especially if it could indirectly benefit a rival by strengthening their lineup.
Pete Hoffman disagrees with Evan Robert's POV concerning Mets, Mariners and Luis Castillo
While Evan Roberts spoke his mind involving a trade for Luis Castillo, his co-host Pete Hoffman didn't quite agree to it.
"My thoughts and feelings on Pete Alonso aside, it’s not like they’re going to get him anyway. It’s not like they want Pete Alonso, so let them go sign Pete," Hoffman said.
The Mets need both an All-Star caliber first baseman and someone who could fill their spot in vacancy. Their pockets are relatively deeper than the Mariners, but the way Pete Alonso's free agency is stretching, it appears that the first baseman might look at deals that give him more years than the Mets are willing to offer.
