The New York Yankees made another notable move in the offseason by signing former NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt following their World Series defeat against the Los Angeles Dodgers in October.
Goldschmidt is one of several players to join the Bronx Bombers, joining All-Star ace Max Fried, closer Devin Williams and All-Star slugger Cody Bellinger, signed or traded in the offseason so far.
Following the slew of moves in the offseason, sportscaster Michael Kay made a bold claim on YES Network, saying:
"The people they brought in have made the team better. If you want to go break down each thing that they've done, it's made them better. Max Fried is an excellent starting pitcher. Devin Williams is one of the best relievers in baseball. Bellinger, obviously, has had an MVP on his wall, had a decent year this year.
"I mean every move they've made has had a purpose and I think it has made them a viable contender for the best team in the American League, I think right now, obviously there still moves to make for other teams. They are the best team in the American League."
Paul Goldschmidt signed on a one-year, $12.5 million deal to fill the void left by first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who walked into free agency after the 2024 season.
Yankees expected to continue spending with Alex Bregman a rumored target
Although the Yankees failed to topple the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Fall Classic, they had a strong season that saw the Bronx Bombers claim the AL pennant for the first time in 15 years.
The Yankees failed to bring back Juan Soto, and while he was a catalyst in the team's run through to the postseason, the Yankees front office has strengthened other spots in the roster to give another shot at the World Series next season.
However, the Yankees are not expected to be done as they are one of the teams reportedly interested in signing All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman. The former Astros star's return to Houston seems unlikely after reports of "stalled" negotiations, alerting other MLB teams.
While the Astros have seemingly moved on from Bregman's pursuit in free agency, the 30-year-old is being pursued by the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays, giving the Yankees a tough competition for his signature.
