Juan Soto heading to Queens may be the biggest headline of this offseason, but there are some crucial vacancies to fill in the New York Mets pitching staff. They have only added Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas to their roster, but neither seemingly has the credentials to be the ace of a pennant-chasing starting rotation.
Sportscaster Evan Roberts isn't impressed with the present New York Mets pitching rotation consisting of Kodai Senga, Frankie Montas, David Peterson, and Clay Holmes. He believes that the team will have to acquire at least one more starting pitcher, such as Dylan Cease or Luis Castillo, before spring training, as the present staff has serious question marks regarding their durability.
Roberts aired his thoughts on the Mets' pitching situation during his podcast for WFAN on Sunday.
"Add someone who you feel pretty damn good about based on their track record [and] is going to give you 180 innings," he said. "Dylan Cease is the definition of that. Luis Castillo is the definition of that. Do I think both guys are true aces, at least the way I define aces? Not really. I wouldn't say that. But they give you a form of stability, and right now, as we've talked about a lot, the Mets have none of that.
"Their number one, as of now, is a guy that made one start last year in Kodai Senga," he added. "Their number two, a very encouraging year for David Peterson, we'd all agree, but he did it for only half a season. Then you've got converted reliever Clay Holmes, project Frankie Montas, and a bunch of swing options that you hope you hit on one of them."
Sean Manea, Jose Quintana, and Luis Severino were the top performers of the Mets pitching staff in 2024, and all three pitchers were allowed to become free agents at the end of the season.
It's not good enough: Evan Roberts on present state of Mets pitching staff
Evan Roberts feels the New York Mets pitching staff isn't good enough to compete for titles at the moment and expects their president of baseball operations, David Stearns, to make some moves at some point in the offseason.
As things stand, he believes their starting rotation pales in comparison with their National League East division rivals Philadelphia Phillies.
"It's not good enough," he said. "You're banking on a lot of surprises and a lot of things we don't see coming. Could happen. Sure. It's baseball. You never know. But I'd not be able to passionately agree and honestly debate that this rotation is good enough.
"Look at the Phillies rotation," he continued. "It's not even in the same league. Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, Jesus Luzardo, Christopher Sanchez. Are you kidding me? Not even close."
The Phillies had one of the best starting rotations in the MLB last season and added to their ranks by acquiring Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins this weekend.
