Star slugger Pete Alonso is yet to find a home for the 2025 season. The first baseman reportedly rejected a three-year deal worth $68 -70 million from the New York Mets.
On the Rico Brogan, an Even Roberts Podcast on WFAN, sportscaster Roberts predicted the next moves Alonso's camp could embark on after the Mets landed A.J. Minter and Jesse Winker. Minter was signed to a two-year, $22 million contract, while Winker was locked in for one more year, worth $7.5 million.
"I think Pete Alonso could still pick up his phone, Aaron Judge-style, and call Steven Cohen. Things might have gotten ugly and dirty but he should express the desire to come back and make things work," Roberts said. (4:19-6:29)
There were rumblings within the free agency landscape that Alonso's camp, led by Scott Boras, had sent an initial three-year proposal to the Mets, as the first baseman was seemingly being passed on by teams on the market.
It was quite unusual for a player being represented by Boras, who usually finds a way for his clients to sign big-money and long-term deals.
"I'm not fully convinced that because the Mets spent $11 million (per annum) on A.J. Minter and as high as $9 million on Jesse Winker, that means Alonso's contract is already off the board," Roberts added.
Evan Roberts remains optimistic about Pete Alonso's future in Queens
Evan Roberts said on his podcast that all hope is not lost when it comes to a reunion between the Mets and star man Pete Alonso.
However, the broadcaster added that there are certain conditions that should be met before it happens:
"I'm not saying that Pete Alonso will pick up the phone and make peace with Steve Cohen. He may not do that until March. Who know what the Mets could do that would put them out of reach of making a deal with Alonso.
"In spite of the Minter and Winker signings, I'm leaving out the idea that it 100% eliminates Alonso from re-signing."
With less emphasis being given on first basemen, it will be interesting to see where Alonso lands ahead of the new season.
