A week ahead of the playoffs, Gleyber Torres' New York Yankees slumped to a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. The Yankees are one of the contenders to make the World Series, but the wild card race is getting more unpredictable with each passing day.

The Yankees fell short against the Orioles, thanks to a base-running error by Gleyber Torres. The team's leading hitter with 56 homers, Aaron Judge said that he isn't happy about the mistake.

"Yeah, it might have been just a little miscommunication, but you know he was hustling the whole way, and I think he won the score," Judge said.
"And you know he got the stop sign and just kind of no man's land right there, so it's you know when it comes down to it stuff like that can't happen, you know can't keep shooting ourselves in the foot with mistakes like that on the base path."

Judge also talked about what they need to do as a team to minimize such errors:

"But you know it happens and we gotta move on and get ready for tomorrow."

The Yankees will have to maintain their first position in the division for five more games to enter the playoffs with the AL best record and home field advantage.

Gleyber Torres explains his side of the play

The Yankees had a 4-2 lead on the top of their head in the seventh inning, and fans were expecting some late-game miracle from the team.

That's when Juan Soto entered the field and hit a RBI single. Alex Verdugo made it to the home base, making it 4-3, and Gleyber Torres made a run for two bases towards the home.

However, he turned back around, when he saw the catcher Adley Rutschman throwing to the second to nab Juan Soto. Soto made it to the second, but the Orioles tagged Torres, ending the inning in an anticlimactic way.

Gleyber Torres tried to explain his thought process for his eventual blunder that cost his team.

"I just tried to protect Soto,” Gleyber Torres said. "I was a little in between to go to home plate. I feel like I went a little bit late and after that, they made me out.
"I feel like I have to be a little more aggressive if I’m going to make that decision — go straight to steal that run," he added.

It marked the sixth time Torres has gotten out at the home plate, which is tied for the most times in MLB history.
