Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal is coming off a stellar 2024 season. He started 31 games, compiling an 18-4 record with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts on 192 innings of work, winning the AL pitching Triple Crown.
At the end of the season, he was awarded the American League Cy Young Award. This marked the first of his career and he is looking to carry that momentum into the 2025 season.
While Skubal has worked hard to get to this point, he also has a huge support system. His family is his biggest support group, including his brothers Tyler, Trent, Trevor and Wil, whom he spoke about on "The Bret Boone Podcast."
"I look up to all my brothers. Everything they've been through and how they support me too is why I am able to go out and do what I do and keep a pretty clear mind about things," said Skubal.
Skubal especially admires Wil, who his family took in when the two were younger. He now works as a SWAT officer, which is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
"His job is a little scary to me. I don't really like his job and his profession that he chose, but somebody in the country's got to do it and I couldn't think of a better guy to do it than him," said Skubal.
Tarik Skubal reveals he and Wil were a bit mischievous as youngsters
Growing up, Detroit Tigers' ace Tarik Skubal could not help but get into trouble at times. He and Wil often got into trouble while Tyler, Trevor and Trent stayed out of trouble.
"[Trevor, Tyler and Trent] were the ones that got into bed and turned their homework in on time and then all that stuff and then me and Wil were the ones sneaking out and playing video games until way too late into the morning and when my parents would catch us, we're hiding in places that you can't be found in the house" said Skubal.
Skubal and Wil would constantly stay up late and sneak out which constantly led to them getting in trouble. They could not help but try and push the boundaries. However, the two boys would straighten out and are on the right path.
Skubal's brothers have been a huge inspiration to him. They helped shape him into the man and competition he is today and he holds all of his brothers close to his heart.
