Mark Canha of the San Francisco Giants, who played with free agent Pete Alonso of the New York Mets in 2022, told Jon Heyman about his thoughts on the hitter's free agency period.

Canha displayed respect for his ex-teammate and talked about how extraordinary Pete Alonso is, as a hitter. Moreover, he also branded Alonso as the best guy he has ever played baseball with and believes the hitter should get an offer he deserves.

"I mean, I think the world of Pete," Caanha said. "He's, as an athlete. as a person, as a baseball player, I mean this guy is one of my favorite people I've played with. And I think he's gonna get his. I think he's gonna get what he deserves at the end of the day because I think at the end of the day you know, there might be some things out there and about him and what type of rumblings.
"But at the end of the day teams know how valuable he is as a player and and what a unique talent he is. And the numbers speak for themselves, and it jumps off the page. You can't ignore that, and I think if you've watched Pete play a lot you obviously, I think you appreciate him more, and it's just I mean, he's one of the best hitters I've ever seen in my life hands down, and I think that doesn't go by the wayside."

Alonso has been a great asset to the New York Mets, setting up a rookie record with 53 home runs in his debut season with the Queens. Thanks to his consistency at the plate, he has been the face of the franchise.

Sportscaster doesn't see $214 million deal happening for Pete Alonso

MLB sportscaster Bob Nightengale is skeptical about Pete Alonso's hopes of securing a $214 million deal. He also talked about the deals that the four-time All-Star could get from the major league teams. Nightengale said:

"I'm willing to pay Pete Alonso 3 years, $90 million or 4 years, a $100 million. And I think that's right where you're at, 4 years, a hundred million dollars and opt out after year one, so if he absolutely shells next year, he can go back to the market.
"I think it's fair for both sides. I don't see other team offering him five years, and I don't see Scott Boras dragging this out into the season because it's different."

Nighengale also made a point that the teams could get players playing at different positions, like Alex Bregman, a third baseman but is willing to play second, while Pete Alonso remains limited to first base:

"Pete Alonso is strictly a first baseman. Most teams are on MLB outside the Giants, maybe Seattle who's trying to be cheap now, have the money to get a guy like Pete Alonso.
"I just don't see it working out. I just think this falls well in the Mets favor, and it's going to end up turning out that, he's going to be a Met, and it's going to be 4 for a $100 to $110 million, right around that range."
