Fans reacted as the best free agent starting pitch Corbin Burnes has reportedly signed with the Arizona Daimondbacks after a long-drawn free agency. While the number, $210 million for six years is around what was expected of Bunes to earn, the destination will shock the baseball community.
Corbin Burnes headed into the offseason with another solid 15-9, 2.92 ERA over 194.1 innings pitched in 2024. He has been one of the most reliable arms in all of baseball and has remained relatively healthy, recording at least 28 regular season starts since 2018 barring the shortened 2020 season. At 30, with age on his side, he was expected to be a big money signing.
The San Francisco Giants and the Toronto Blue Jays seemed to be the biggest suitors to sign Burnes. The two teams remained the final two contenders after the other big market clubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Dodgers had splurged their cash on other signings.
Fans were frankly jolted as the news broke out as they shared their reactions:
"Teoscar is gonna bully him for a few years I ain’t tripping," a fan trolled.
"Dodgers fan own him, btw," another wrote.
"He’s gonna hate it when he has a era under 3 and has 24 losses 😂😂😂," a fan said.
"This is the most random spot possible for him," a fan said about the Dbacks.
"At this point, MLB will probably have to force someone to go to the Blue Jays 😂 Why doesn’t anyone want to play there?," a fan trolled Toronto.
"Top level free agents enter talks with the Giants solely to leverage that offer against other more desirable teams," another user empathised with the Giants.
Main reason why Corbin Burnes chose Arizona over other two teams
As per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the San Francisco and Toronto had offered longer deals with more value to Corbin Burnes. But Arizona's tax laws in comparison to California and Canada made it easier for Burnes to make his decision.
At $210 million for six years, Burnes has an annual average value of $35 million on his contract. He has an opt-out option available at the end of the second year, which seems more like a formality. The Dbacks have bolstered their rotation and locked up their ace through his age-36 season.
