Teoscar Hernandez signed a three-year, $66 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, extending his stay with the team where he earned his first World Series ring. The outfielder's importance to the team was recognized by manager Dave Roberts.
Sports Net LA's Kirsten Watson caught up with Roberts, who made his feelings known about the club re-signing Teoscar, commending his consistency and managing to do well during big spots.
"The main thing is, I think for a manager, the what you look for is someone, you know what you're going to get. And I think with Teo, you know what you're going to get, and that's just the consistency. His highs were really good and very consistent, and the lows were very small, and he just kind of finds a way not to dig himself too big of holes and fight through it. And he shows up, he posts, he plays every day, essentially. And he has a knack for getting big hits," Roberts said.
Teoscar Hernandez opens up about 'priority' to return to Los Angeles
Teoscar Hernandez hit .272 with 99 RBIs, including 33 home runs, last season. That could have easily garnered him a contract upwards of a $25 million annual average value, but he chose to sign the $66 million deal with the Dodgers because he felt the comfort of getting to perform with the organization.
He stated that the difference in money was never going to stop him from choosing the Dodgers over others.
"I went to Free agency, I think I've made that clear before, I went there and Dodgers were the priority and i was going to do everything in power to come back. For me, money wasn’t an issue. I could’ve waited for more offers from other teams, but the money wasn’t going to be the difference. I could get, like, $5 or $6 million more from other teams, but if you put me in a place where I had to decide, I would’ve decided to come back.
“Just because the way this organization is, the way this organization treats family and the players, to me that is more important than anything,” Teoscar said.
Teoscar Hernandez will rejoin the formidable trio of MVPs Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman at the top of the order, who propelled them to the World Series success. The Dodgers are a better looking team this season, having acquired Blake Snell to their pitching staff, with Ohtani also expected to return to the mound. They are the current favorites to make it back-to-back in October.
