The Texas Rangers bolstered their bullpen on Saturday. The team announced that they had signed left-handed reliever Will Smith. The two sides agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal.
Smith spent the bulk of last season with the Houston Astros, winning the World Series. The year before that, he was a member of the World Series-winning Atlanta Braves. Could this be a trend?
Smith split his time between Atlanta and Houston in 2022. He held a 3.97 ERA over 65 appearances. He'll slot in nicely next to guys like Taylor Hearn, Jake Odorizzi, and Brock Burke.
The Rangers aren't messing around this year when it comes to pitching. Earlier in the offseason, they signed Jacob deGrom in free agency. When healthy, deGrom is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
"The last 2 teams to have Will Smith won the World Series," one fan explained.
"We're nasty," another fan tweeted.
Texas Rangers fans couldn't be happier with the signing. They're adding a lefty to their bullpen who knows how to win the big game.
Signing Smith reunites him with his old San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy. Bochy was the one who gave him his first shot at being a closer in 2018. It wouldn't be surprising if he were used in a high-leverage role this season.
The Texas Rangers are going to be an interesting team
The Texas Rangers finished fourth in the American League West last season with a 68-94 record. It wasn't the season they were hoping for after signing Corey Seager and Marcus Semien.
Semien started the season abysmally, hitting .159 in the first month and a half of the season. He turned it around by the end of the year as he hit .248 with 26 home runs.
Semien will look to start the season the way he finished it last year. There's no way he can start that badly again.
Corey Seager finished the season with the worst batting average of his career (.245). Fans will likely see an increase in his batting average this year with the new shift restrictions. Seager is one of the most shifted-on batters in the entire sport.
One player to keep an eye on this season is Adolis Garcia. He is one of the most underrated players in the league. He's a five-tool player who could be one of the stolen base leaders this season.
The Rangers will be an interesting team to follow this season. They have what it takes to be a great team if they can stay healthy and stay away from slumps.
