Jorge Lopez went viral for his outburst following a loss on Wednesday. The media believed he was ranting about his own team, the New York Mets, which preceded a release from the club. He has since taken to Instagram to clarify his statement and suggest that he was talking about himself and no one else.
"Whoever hear me, I said 'teammate' and what I said on the situation, I been the worst teammate. Thanks media for making it worse," Lopez said.
Lopez, who is not a native English speaker, was believed to have said he was on the "worst f*****g team" about the Mets. The loss, which Lopez pitched in and was ejected from, dropped their record to 22-33.
However, Lopez had also said he didn't regret his actions on the field, which included throwing a glove into the stands. He also said that he'd be happy if the Mets wanted him back, via ESPN:
"Whatever happened, happened. I'll be here tomorrow if they want me. Whatever they want to do. I'm going to keep doing this thing, you know. I'm healthy. ... I'm ready to come back tomorrow if they want me to be here. So I'll be here."
Ultimately, they did not want him back, but Lopez did seek the chance to clarify his words. He was not defaming his team, but putting some blame and criticism on himself for what he did and how he let down his teammates in that situation.
Mets DFA Jorge Lopez after viral incident
New York Mets reliever Jorge Lopez was ejected by an umpire in the eighth inning of a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander was tossed for yelling at third base umpire Ramon De Jesus after Freddie Freeman's checked swing ruling went the other way.
He was visibly frustrated as he left the field, yelling and gesturing. He then took his glove off and sent it flying into the stands.
Manager Carlos Mendoza deemed it inappropriate, but the loss, and maybe Lopez's antics, prompted a team meeting later that day. Lopez may or may not have attended the meeting, as he was marked for assignment shortly after the game.
