It was a disappointing end to the season for Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees. After taking a commanding 5-0 lead early in Game 5 of the World Series, the Yankees collapsed, as several defensive errors in the 5th inning came back to haunt them.
Both Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe were charged with errors in the inning, which ultimately proved costly as the LA Dodgers were able to score five runs to tie the ball game. While errors are a part of the game, the two could not have come at a worse time for Boone's team as they were on the brink of elimination.
While there was frustration from fans with the lack of fundamental play on the field, it was Boone's postgame press conference that added fuel to the fire. The veteran manager was reluctant to call out any of his players, and instead opted to seemingly make excuses for the errors. It did not sit well with frustrated New York Yankees fans.
"That answer should get him fired TODAY," one fan posted.
"Boone even Jeter, Arod and Big papi said you guys have been horrible fundamentally.. that was an unreal series of events but it’s been happening all postseason," another fan posted.
"Praising the fundamentals after tonight is why ppl hate Boone," one fan said.
It will be a difficult game for Yankees players to move on from, not only because they lost the World Series, but also because they collapsed against the Dodgers. For Boone, his response to the media will not exactly help his case to remain as the team's manager in the future.
"Fundamentally... we have been sketchy all year. Then all magnified in one inning today," one fan shared.
"This is why he’s the problem. Excuse after excuse with absolutely ZERO accountability. It starts from the top," a fan commented.
"Not sure anyone understood what he was saying. Call it for what it was. Unacceptable!" one fan wrote.
Even though he was able to help guide the New York Yankees back to the World Series for the first time since 2009, it seems that fans do not believe that he is the right manager to get their team over the hump.
The New York Yankees are expected to pick up Aaron Boone's option for 2025
While it appears that Boone will be back next season, if the team underperforms, he could be on the hot seat for most of the 2025 campaign. To be fair to him, the New York Yankees were able to reach the World Series, which should be enough for the team to pick up the club's option.
It remains to be seen beyond 2025 or even if Aaron Boone will make it to the end of the season. The former Cincinnati Reds infielder has been the Yankees manager since 2018, posting a 603-429 record, with the loss to the Dodgers being the team's only World Series appearance during his tenure.
