On Saturday, the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs lined up for Game 2 of their three-game series. The Cubbies got the better of the Sox in the first game, but it was all Boston in Game 2.
The Sox pushed across 17 runs, blanking Chicago 17-0. They outhit the Cubbies 21-5, making it a game that fans will quickly want to forget.
Ben Brown got the start for Chicago and did not last long. He went 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. The bullpen was not much better, giving up the remaining 14 runs.
The ugly loss has Chicago fans distraught. A day after watching Shota Imanaga shine, the club completely fell apart. The loss drops the Cubbies to 17-10, second in the NL Central behind the Milwaukee Brewers.
"That was not fun to watch. Come back tomorrow and try to take the series" - one fan posted.
"The Pats wouldn't have even done that against the Bears" - another fan posted.
"Gave up 17 runs? How?" - posted another.
Fans cannot believe that the Red Sox put up a football score on them. Not often do you see an MLB team scoring this many runs.
"I wouldn't even post this lmao" - said another fan.
"What? Dang. Glad I turned it off in the seventh inning" - said another.
"Thought it was the Bears final score for a second" - said another.
With the series tied at one apiece, Sunday's matchup decides the series. Chicago is expected to hand the ball to Jordan Wicks, while Boston will start Tanner Houck on the mound.
What happened to the Cubs on Saturday?
There was not much to write home about for the Cubs on Saturday. From pitching to hitting, not much went right for the club in Boston.
Five starters failed to get a hit on Saturday, including Nico Hoerner, Mike Tauchman, Ian Happ, Dansby Swanson, and Matt Mervis. It is tough to win ballgames when that many players cannot get on base.
Chicago left eight runners on base and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. This is unlike them, as they have had little problems pushing runs across the board this season.
Chicago must dig deep and return tomorrow as a different team. If they do not, they will watch the series slip away.
