Toronto Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt had a forgettable outing against his former team, the Oakland Athletics, on Sunday. While his performance was underwhelming, to say the least, Bassitt's post-game comments caught the eye of MLB fans.

The All-Star pitcher took the loss in the Jays' 8-4 defeat on Sunday. He pitched four innings, giving up seven earned runs over eight hits. Following the loss, Bassitt said that the closed roof at Rogers Centre played a part in his performance.

"Roof closed, completely different than roof being open, wasn't really ready for it," Bassitt said. "I had to completely change my mechanics to kinda get the movement I wanted."

However, the fans didn't buy into the comments from the Blue Jays pitcher.

"That's actually the lamest excuse I've heard a pitcher come up with."
"I have a lot of respect for Bassitt but that’s a terrible excuse. He wasn’t good enough today," wrote another fan.
"Maybe the alignment of the planets was not not right either?" mocked another fan.

Fans continued to mock Bassitt for his comments, referencing A's pitcher JP Sears' performance in the same conditions.

"Seemed to be ok for J.P Sears today," scribbled a fan.
"Jp Sears seemed to be good lol," pointed out another fan.
"Same for both teams!" exclaimed another fan.

Chris Bassitt had a horrible outing after a season-high strikeout performance

The 35-year-old pitcher has been falling short in his performances since the All-Star break but he entered the game against the Athletics on the back of a season-high performance against the Orioles where he struck out nine hitters in seven innings.

Chris Bassitt conceded seven runs in his latest outing on Sunday and his more to do with his sluggish start than anything else as he conceded six of those seven runs in the first inning of the game.

JJ Bleday was the first to cash in with a two-run homer against the veteran starter before Zack Gelof went deep for two runs in the same inning. His Sunday nightmare means that Chris Bassitt now has a 4.30 ERA over 24 starts this season.
