Aaron Boone's New York Yankees again fell 5-3 in Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The team's performances have drastically declined in the past three weeks. They have lost three consecutive series openers and haven't won a series in the last seven series.
While meeting with the media after the Rays loss, Boone believes that moving forward is the only option for the team right now. They need to figure out a way out of this mire and get back on the winning track once again.
Boone pointed out that despite playing from behind, the team still had their chances until the end.
"Yeah, I mean, it's never easy to play from behind. But no, you can't look at it that way. You know, we get a lead there and I thought we at least gave ourselves a chance and put some guys out there.
"Obviously, a big swing by Benny right there. And we're right in the game. And then, you know, even in the ninth, they're good at bat by DJ and Juan smokes a ball. Looks like we got a chance to get Aaron to the plate there. So, you know, the bats were OK," Aaron Boone said.
Boone then issued a rallying cry to his team amid their current struggles.
"And you can't look at it that way. You know, that's defeatism. You know, like, screw that. We got to get after it regardless of, of course, we want to run out to a big lead. But can't look at it that way. You just got to keep playing and keep trying to string together their quality at-bats."
Aaron Boone gets blasted by MLB insider
The New York Yankees are in a tailspin as they've lost 13 of their last 16, dropping them out of first place in the AL East. The concerns have now moved over to the manager Aaron Boone, who is feeling the heat.
Amid their slump, MLB insider Joel Sherman criticized Aaron Boone's handling of recent errors and a perceived lack of hustle by the players on Episode 17 of the Pinstripe Post podcast. While acknowledging Boone's past success and popularity, Sherman worries that shying away from tough decisions could hurt his credibility as a leader.
"If you keep dabbling in on reality, you lose credibility. Suggesting in real-time that DJ LeMahieu was running hard on the back end of that double play—that’s unreality. I’m watching too much that feels addressable and correctable. If you’re not, you could say, ‘Oh, I don’t like the game played that way’ and tolerate it. Tolerating it is condoning it," Sherman said.
The Yankees have a 13-17 record against AL East teams and have gone just 5-16 in 21 games since June 15, per the Canadian Press. That is the worst record in the majors over that time.
