The St. Louis Cardinals went from early postseason contender to barely staying afloat for a postseason spot with only a month remaining in the regular season. The Cardinals (66-67) are seven games out of an NL Wild Card spot and even fans have started to show low enthusiasm with their presence (or lack thereof) at the stadium.
Against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, Busch Stadium recorded an all-time low attendance since moving in back in 2006 with only 27,224 tickets being sold, as per WKBN First. Another report from the St. Louis Dispatch said slightly less than 13,000 fans went through the security gate.
The problem doesn't just stop there. For Wednesday's game against the same opponent, tickets were sold for as little as $6. One fan also noted tickets being sold with prices of $1 and $0.
This caused a stir on social media, with fans trolling the front office and club for their disastrous season:
"We are loyal. Love the players. Hate the front office," one fan commented.
"I don’t think people understand that the Cardinal fans are doing this in spite of the front office being inept has nothing to do with fair weather fans," another added.
"That’s what happens when ur front office is a joke," another wrote.
One fan blamed the ownership directly:
"This comments are so idiotic, the reason Cards fans aren’t going to games is because of our terrible ownership, they know our fan base is too loyal so they don’t think they have to spend money on quality players, it’s not hard to comprehend. We have to make there pockets hurt."
Some had other reasons to explain the low turnover at Busch Stadium:
"Baseball is dying sport. Just ask ESPN and why they won’t re-up the currant contract," one fan wrote.
"Poverty fan base," another added.
St. Louis Cardinals mathematically still in contention for postseason
While it should be an afterthought that the Cards won't make the postseason, a slim hope still remains.
As per FanGraphs, the Cardinals have a 0.3% chance of winning the division and a 0.3% chance of clinching a Wild Card Spot. Furthermore, they have a 1.2% chance of making the postseason.
Apart from winning almost every game, they will need Wild Card contenders like the Arizona Diamondbacks, Padres and New York Mets to start losing. With one month remaining, the Cardinals need to devour their 7.0 games trailing if they want to play in October.
