Just like their NL West rivals LA Dodgers, the San Diego Padres are one of the biggest spending teams in MLB. The triumvirate of Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts make up more than half of the Padres' payroll for 2025.
In the titular podcast of legendary sports talk show, host Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton, a media personality, talked about how the Padres did business.
"That's the way A.J Preller does business," said Hamilton.

Hamilton discussed Padres president and general manager AJ Preller's penchant to sign big names into long contracts irrespective of the amount.
"He's on the hook for a lot of long-term contracts. Manny Machado's contract is going to go through his age 40 season. (Xander) Bogaerts' contract goes until age 42. While (Fernando) Tatis's (Jr.) contract is going to be until in his upper-30's because it's good for 14 years."
Manny Machado signed a 10-year, $300 million deal with the in 2019. Xander Bogarts' unexpected arrival last offseason, meanwhile, netted him an 11-year, $280 million deal. Meanwhile, Fernando Tatis Jr. signed a 14-year contract worth $340 million ahead of the 2021 campaign, putting a dent in the Padres' payroll.
Questions were asked of Preller when he extended five-year All-Star Yu Darvish's contract ahead of the 2023 season. The Padres general manager gave Darvish a six-year, $108 million contract in his age 37 season. The move was divisive but was seen by some as a way to contend in the stacked National League and perhaps give San Diego its first title.
Manny Machado and teammates set franchise record
For the first time, four San Diego Padres players were named to All-MLB teams. At the All-MLB Awards, Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill, Dylan Cease and Michael King were named to the All-MLB Second Team.
The honor was Machado's third of his career after being named in the First Team during the 2020 and 2022 seasons. Cease, meanwhile, was named to his second Second Team selection after winning it with the White Sox in 2022. As for King and Merrill, it was their maiden prize, with Merrill debuting this year.
