The New York Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins at the trade deadline for a reason. Chisholm Jr. is a versatile infielder who can play anywhere on the diamond.
On Thursday, in their game against the Los Angeles Angels, Chisholm Jr. played third base, only for the ninth time in his career (all with the Yankees), even though he is more accustomed to playing shortstop or second base in his major league career. Chisholm Jr. did well there, as he made all the plays coming his way and it seems he is open to getting more reps at the position.
"I feel pretty good at third base, you know, the more games I play the more comfortable I get over there," Chisholm Jr. said. "I just I feel like when I'm on the dirt, I feel like it's me again. This is myself, you know, so I go out there and just play my game have fun. Enjoy it. And I feel like third base is just like shortstop to me." [0:59 onwards].
Jazz Chisholm Jr. has played nine games at third base and is yet to commit an error. In his career, he has mostly played second base, shortstop and centerfield.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. talks about his adjustments at the plate coming to fruition
Coming into this game, Jazz Chisholm Jr. was experiencing a batting slump, going 3-19 in his last five games. However, despite the losing effort, Chisholm Jr. did add one more home run to his 13 on the season.
The third baseman mentioned working on his swing mechanics during the batting session, which bore fruit on Thursday. In the bottom of the second inning, Chisholm Jr. blasted a 418-foot home run to right center field against Tyler Anderson.
"I feel like I was getting a little bit big, you know. Right feels kind of short. So I was really going over there and pulling off the ball a little bit and I was six. Jerry and Casey worked all day and the results came out," he said.
Despite his homer, the Yankees' pitching was underwhelming as they allowed nine runs. Nestor Cortes Jr. was a no-show, giving up six earned runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. On the other hand, Tyler Anderson pitched six innings and only allowed one run to earn himself a win in a 9-4 victory for the Angels in the rubber game.
