All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso's free agency is stretching further than anyone would've expected as the former Rookie of the Year is yet to find a team in the offseason.

Pete Alonso was one of the most coveted infielders on the market after he opted for free agency after the 2024 season with the New York Mets. However, Alonso's agent Scott Boras' high AAV demand for his client has seemingly reduced interest from teams in the four-time All-Star.

The Mets reportedly offered a $90 million deal for three years in December. However, both parties seem away from a reunion. Sportscaster Evan Roberts feels that the Mets front office are playing the waiting game as they feel no other team will match their offer for Pete Alonso.

He said on WFAN's "Rico Brogna" on Wednesday (32:50 onwards):

"I think what the Mets are banking on right now, and it's risky because of the timetable as we've talked about, is that no one's going to beat them. That ultimately the Mets will make Pete Alonso the best offer and it just comes down to when will Scott Boras tuck his tail between his legs and tell his client 'Hey, look what I told you a year ago, when I stole you from your former agent, well, it turned out not to be true.'"

However, Roberts feels there is a way Scott Boras can get Alonso a favorable deal as he did with Blake Snell, saying:

"I guess the likeliest scenario, and maybe the best-case scenario for the match, is he ends up coming back on a pillow contract. So the sell to Pete Alonso is you are Blake Snell. I got you a lot of money this year, you're gonna make 30 million dollars, which would be the highest average annual salary for a first baseman ever.
"So I got you that go have a big year and opt out and I will get you the monster contract I promised, you look what I did for Blake Snell because it ended up working out great for Snell."

Blake Snell was in a similar position to Pete Alonso last year as his free agency dragged till March. Snell eventually signed a $62 million deal over two years for the San Francisco Giants. However, after a strong second half of the year with the Giants, Snell opted out of his contract and signed a mega $182 million deal for five years with the Los Angeles Dodgers in November.

Mets sportscaster disbands theory of Pete Alonso not being in David Stearns' plans

Evan Roberts also shot down the theory that Pete Alonso is no longer in David Stearns' plans for the Mets. Roberts feels the Mets would have traded for Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. if they were not interested in bringing back Alonso.

"So, if the New York Mets—if your theory is true that they don’t want Pete back, have no interest—they could have made this decision earlier by either trading for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., signing somebody else, whoever you want to come up with, and saying, 'See?' Kind of like, again, what Houston did and what Atlanta did."

Although the Mets signed Juan Soto to a blockbuster deal in the offseason, the team is expected to add another reliable bat. If they fail to bring back Pete Alonso, the Mets can pivot with the signing of Alex Bregman, who has been linked with a move to Detroit over the last few days.
