New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. has been one to try to keep opposing batters on their toes in unconventional ways. The lefty often manipulates his windup, trying to disrupt the hitter's timing and throw them off.
That was no different in his start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. He made one pitch in the game where he had multiple hitches in his windup which resulted in a ball.
Cortes Jr. is not the only pitcher to do things like this, but he is one of the most predominant. The hitches in his delivery have been something fans have slammed him on in the past.
Many baseball fans think the move is bush league. They think the move should be considered a balk, however, the Yankees' lefty does this when he is in the windup, which is not a balk.
"The umpire should go out there and slap him" - said a fan.
"That should be illegal" - said another.
"I know it's not technically a balk, but it should be, IMO" - said another.
Balks are meant to prohibit the pitcher from deceiving the runners on base, not necessarily the batter. The umpires cannot rule his delivery as a balk with no runners on base.
"This infuriates me but I can’t explain why" - said another.
"Thanks I hate it" - said another.
"All that for a ball" - said another.
While Cortes Jr. continues to mess with hitter's timing, he will continue to get blasted by various baseball fans. They desperately want to see a rule change prohibiting pitchers from doing this.
Nestor Cortes Jr. and the Yankees completed their sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday
On Wednesday, Nestor Cortes Jr. and the Yankees had the opportunity to complete a three-game sweep of the Phillies. Philadelphia holds the best record across MLB, so a sweep would be huge.
Cortes Jr. did not have his greatest start, but it was enough to keep Philadelphia down. He lasted 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out six.
The offense was great, scoring four runs in the second inning, and two in the sixth. Giancarlo Stanton looked especially great on Wednesday, finishing the day going 2-for-4, giving the Yanks a 6-5, and completing the sweep over one of baseball's best.
