"There should be a Home Run Derby that only includes retired players" - Jose Canseco wants to see a format for former sluggers

Former MLB slugger Jose Canseco is no stranger to coming out with outlandish ideas and making headlines. Earlier in the year, he petitioned to become the self-appointed manager of the Oakland Athletics when they move to Oakland next season.

The petition has over 1,200 signatures and is growing. However, he has another idea that he came up with Tuesday afternoon, and honestly, it is something to consider.

With All-Star weekend right around the corner, Canseco wants to see the former players get involved. He wants to see a Home Run Derby just dedicated to retired MLB sluggers.

"There should be a Home Run Derby that only includes retired players" - said Canseco.

The Home Run Derby is a fan favorite, so why not add to it? There are a ton of retired players who still have that sweet swing and could be itching to step back into the batter's box.

I would venture to bet that players like David Ortiz or Albert Pujols still have the juice to hit the long ball. This is something that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred may want to think about.

Which former MLB sluggers could be considered for the Home Run derby outside Jose Canseco?

If Jose Canseco got his wish, and a Home Run Derby is implemented for former players, he could have some stiff competition. There were three sluggers that just retired last season who physically could shine with this format.

One name that comes to mind immediately is Nelson Cruz. He hit 464 home runs over the course of his 19-year career in the big leagues.

Another recently retired slugger who could join in on the action could be Eric Hosmer. Like Cruz, he retired following the end of the 2023 season but still has the power.

Hosmer played 13 years in the big leagues, compiling 198 home runs throughout his career. However, there are some older-generation players who still look to be in great shape and could participate.

Ken Griffey Jr. has continued to work inside the league after retiring in 2010. While he retired in order not to be a distraction to the Seattle Mariners with his body starting to fail him, he still has his sweet swing.

Jose Canseco comes up with some whacky ideas, but this one could really drum up some more excitement around the league. This is something the league should consider.
