Jack Flaherty's first start as a Dodger was a strong one, as he went through six innings without earning a run against the Oakland Athletics at Coliseum on Saturday. The former Detroit Tigers pitcher helped his new team earn a thumping 10-0 victory, earning praise from manager Dave Roberts.
Jack Flaherty's debut with the Dodgers came at a crucial time when the team was desperate in need of a solid win. LA had just one win from six games, part of their eight-game road stretch. They only won the series finale in Houston on July 29 before getting swept by the Padres in a two-game series and losing game 1 in Oakland.
In six innings, the pitcher saved himself from five hits and one walk. Flaherty got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning that helped secure the team's slender 2-0 lead. He had 67 strikes during the game and employed a strong breaking ball as the As only fared 2-13 against it.
Roberts said he's satisfied with Flaherty's performance and is impressed by his concentration laid on the mound.
"I thought there was a quiet intensity to him," Dave Roberts said. "He was very focused, very controlled. I just love the way he used his entire pitch mix.
Jack Flaherty looking to enjoy the moment as a Dodger
Jack Flaherty had a moment to savour as he took to the mound. Following his impressive outing, the 28-year-old commented on being able to contribute to his team's win.
"Anytime you get a chance to help a team win, that's all that matters. That's the important part about it," Flaherty said. "I'll take the time tonight and kind of let it soak it all in."
Flaherty is averaging 1.14 ERA over his last four starts and 1.57 ERA over his last nine. If he continues that form, he would a be strong addition in the rotation heading into the postseason.
