“There’s more ways to winning than win in the win column” - Alex Rodriguez says there are more aspects to victory than defeating one's opponents

Even though Alex Rodriguez has not played in the MLB since 2016, he remains one of the most polarizing figures in and around baseball. The three-time MVP was one of the most talented players of all time. However, his use of performance-enhancing drugs has not only tarnished his legacy but his standing among fans.

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Alex Rodriguez has been a successful businessman throughout his career. The 48-year-old, who made hundreds of millions of dollars throughout his playing career, has parlayed the lessons he learned as a player to his life in the business world.

During a recent speaking event with Aspen Ideas, Rodriguez credited some of his former leaders and team owners for showing that value of winning.

“There’s more ways to winning than win in the win column," the former New York Yankees star told the audience. "There's winning in building a great team, in building a geat culture, building an unselfishness," the former All-Star continued explaining.

Of the men that he credited for helping him learn these lessons, Rodriguez mentioned George Steinbrenner, the legendary former owner of the New York Yankees. Steinbrenner was still in charge of the Bronx Bombers when they made the historic trade that fetched Alex Rodriguez from the Texas Rangers.

A-Rod was not the only baseball mind who spoke at the event regarding the value and effect that winning can have. New owner of the Baltimore Orioles, David M. Rubenstein, also shared his opinion with the audience. The O's owner said the power of winning in sports can bring people together, including strangers or those who have only one thing in common.

"People that don't even know each other are hugging each other, high-fiving each other," Rubenstein said. "Performing art can make you happy, and sports can make you happy if your team wins," he continued, emphasizing how difficult happiness can be in modern times.

Having the perspective of a former MVP player and current owner is certainly interesting. Coincidentally, Rodriguez's former club, the New York Yankees, and Ruberstein's Orioles are battling for supremacy in the American League East.
