Alex Bregman might hold the key to the remainder of the offseason. The two-time World Series champion remains without a new contract despite being one of the top players in his position; however, once he does sign, it could spark a series of other deals. Bregman and Pete Alonso are the two top free agents remaining, and once they come off the market, teams will need to pivot dramatically.

Regarding Bregman's free agency, the two-time All-Star has been linked to several clubs, including the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and Chicago Cubs. That being said, it appears that the latter might have a tough road to climb if they are hoping to bring in the superstar infielder.

According to MLB insiders Chandler Rome, Sahadev Sharm, and PJ Mooney, the Cubs might not be financially able to secure Bregman's signature. The trio reported in a piece for The Athletic that the club's current budget may not allow them the opportunity to sign the star. This revelation sent several fans to social media to share their opinions and frustrations about the report.

"These guys who run the cubs are f**kin jokesters," a fan wrote.
"God I hate this f**king team always crying poor. Same sh*t different year," another fan posted.
"I'm surprised any player would even want to talk to us for being so cheap," a fan said.

The news comes as a surprise to many fans, as the club traded away Cody Bellinger's sizable contract to the New York Yankees earlier this offseason. This is not to mention the other contracts that came off the books in free agency, such as Kyle Hendricks'.

"Traded Bellinger to clear up what?" a fan asked.
"I can be a better owner than this shameful group," another fan shared.
"Worst run organization in baseball," one fan added.

Alex Bregman has reportedly shut down the notion of signing a short-term deal

Whether it's the Chicago Cubs or a club such as the Detroit Tigers, they must reportedly add some years to any potential Alex Bregman signing. Bregman's agent, Scott Boras, explained to MLB insider Bob Nightengale that the superstar is focused on securing a long-term rather than a short-term deal with a higher annual salary.

There is a chance that Boras and his team are simply using this as a negotiating tactic. However, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 has reported that at least three clubs have sent him five-year contract offers. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for Alex Bregman. However, it seems that the Cubs may be on the outside looking in.
