Seattle Mariners' manager Scott Servais recently praised starting pitcher Bryce Miller's performance against the New York Mets on Friday. The 25-year-old threw six innings, only allowing three hits and a walk.
Coming into the game, the Mariners knew a win was very important to keep pace with the division-leading Houston Astros, who won a rollercoaster clash at Fenway Park earlier.
That's exactly what they accomplished, as the offence backed their pitcher's strong outing with important go-ahead runs in the second and then tacked on four more in the seventh. This was just after the 25-year-old was relieved of his duties.
Speaking to Fanatics View after the game, Servais talked about how all of his starter's variations were on point on Friday (0:14).
"Bryce Miller, outstanding tonight. That might have been the best stuff we've seen out of him all year long. He's got a finish on the fast ball, the two-seamer and the four-seamer. He had the breaking balls going. It's great to see a young pitcher have so much in the tank."
Speaking about how the fastball was a key part of Bryce's arsenal to keep the explosive Mets' offence at bay, the Mariners skipper added:
"Bryce has got a lot of weapons. He can make adjustments, and all his extra pitches are really cool, but you gotta have the fastball. When he had the life on the fastball tonight, he got the ball by Lindor, JD Martinez, there are really good hitters over there. They can't do anything with the fastball, it was just exploding out of his hand."
Finally, speaking about how Miller has worked on his endurance to be able to go deeper into games, and how important that is for the team, Servais said:
"It's huge [for Miller to be able to pitch longer into games]. It's something that he hasn't always had, there was a time when he struggled to get through the sixth inning. I'm really happy with what Bryce has left in the tank, with many big games yet to come, you need your horses to have enough in the tank."
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza and Francisco Lindor commended Miller's strong outing
Bryce Miller's six scoreless innings last night look even better when one looks at how hot the New York Mets' offense had been coming into Friday's clash. Boasting numerous quality sluggers, the Mets had scored 14 runs in their last two before being shut out at T-Mobile Park.
Speaking to SNY after the game, Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza attributed a lot of the Mets' struggles to Bryce's strong performance (3:12).
"Miller was pretty good. The fastball was really good, especially at the top. The way he was using it outside the strikezone, the splitter, the breaking ball, the slider, I thought he was on tonight."
Leadoff hitter Francisco Lindor also cited Bryce's exploits, along with the Seattle defensive solidity, for his side's lack of attacking production(3:36).
"Miller had good stuff today, he executed his pitches [well]. When we had people on base, they executed their plan and we didn't, so hats off to them. It was a bit of a chess match, and they won today."
The Mets and the Mariners meet again on Saturday, in game two out of three at T-Mobile Park. With both teams harboring strong playoff ambitions, both sets of fans will be hoping to claim victory in a series that still hangs very much in the balance.
