Baltimore Orioles rookie Jackson Holliday's dad Matt made fun of his wife Leslee's upbringing in a recent podcast appearance.
On The Pure Athlete Podcast, co-hosted by Jeff Francoeur, Leslee revealed that she grew up in Higgins, Texas, where her father and grandfather were ranch owners. Matt quickly poked fun at the town his wife grew up in.
"Smallest town you've ever met. They don't even have a school anymore like. It went from like super small to barely existing," Matt said. [Timestamp 8:48]
Leslee said she loved growing up in an obscure town with her parents, Steve and Janice, and her two brothers.
"We lived there, we loved it, and so I have two younger brothers. I had a lot of fun hanging out with my brothers and my dad riding horses and just being a kid in the middle of 'nowhere', Texas," Leslee said. [Timestamp 8:59]
The family moved to Oklahoma when she was in seventh grade. She met Matt at Oklahoma State University–Stillwater through a blind date.
Jackson Holliday's mom Leslee on adapting to become a sports parent
Jackson Holliday has already showcased his tremendous power in the big league. As the son of Matt Holliday, a four-time Silver Slugger, it hasn't come as a big surprise. Interestingly, Jackson might have inherited his athletic qualities from not only his father but also his mother.
On The Pure Athlete Podcast, Leslee was asked about adapting to being a parent of top athletes. For context, in addition to Jackson Holliday, her second son, Ethan, is a top prospect too, and her daughter Gracyn Ivy is a cheerleader. Leslee revealed that she was an athletic kid as she grew up with two brothers.
"My brothers were both really good athletes, and I was always athletic, so that was part of my upbringing. We were always outside; never inside kids. We were always doing something physical, and that made it easy to want to raise my kids or raise our kids, the same way when we got married. I just wanted them to be outside, doing something they enjoy, for as long as I can remember," Leslee said. [Timstamp 10:01]
She also revealed that Jackson always had a fondness for baseball, which she attributed to her and her husband's upbringing.
Jackson was drafted with the No. 1 pick in the 2022 MLB draft. Ethan is touted to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft. If this happens, Jackson and Ethan would become the only brothers in history to be drafted No. 1.
