Jason Heyward's future was up in the air after he was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week. However, fortunes turned, as the Houston Astros signed the free agent with a potential clash against his former team in the postseason.
The Astros agreed on a deal with the veteran outfielder on Thursday after he passed a physical on Wednesday. The club wants to have him going in the outfield, which has been without Kyle Tucker due to an injury since the first week of June.
Heyward's move to Houston saw wishes being sent to him and his wife, Vedrana Heyward, who led many Dodgers wives' parties this season. Among them was first baseman Freddie Freeman's wife, Chelsea, who reacted to the news on her social media.
"They [Astros] are lucky to have them [Jason and Vedrana]," Chelsea wrote in her story.
Jason Heyward talks about his move to the Astros
After the move was official, Jason Heyward was grateful for another opportunity, that too with a competitive team in the Astros.
“Stepping into a new clubhouse is always cool, but more importantly, especially when a team is trying to win every day,” he said. “I’m just happy to be a part of the grind with them every day.”
“I know there’s a lot of guys who are here from the core [of Astros’ title teams in 2017 and ‘22] but also some younger guys, as well,” Heyward added. “It’s another opportunity for me to play with some future Hall of Famers in this game, which I don’t take for granted."
Heyward signed a one-year, $9 million contract with the Dodgers in the offseason. His injuries limited his time at the plate, with him only playing 63 games where he hit .208/.289/.393 with six homers and 28 RBIs.
"As far as what’s in [the] tank, I was on the IL a few times this year, and I think there was a lot of baseball I was hoping to play. Hopefully this gives me a chance to play a couple of more months,” Heyward said via MLB.com.
Jason Heyward made an instant impact for the Astros after registering an RBI double to open the scoring for the team on his debut in a come-from-behind 6-3 win against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
