It is not often that MiLB captures the attention of a Major League audience. However, owing to a zany new design, the minor leagues seem to be capturing fan interest of late.
The craze was spurred on by MLB's official X account sharing a video of the "Munchie Mitt", a new glove design that allows fans to multi-task while taking in a ballgame.
"Tired of not being able to hold your hot dog, have a drink, AND catch a home run ball at the same time? Meet the Munchie Mitt - only in @ MiLB," MLB posted on X.
The glove is a feat of engineering. In addition to featuring a place to hold a cold drink, the Munchie Mitt also dispenses hot dogs, and comes with space for all the condiments. Understandably, the marketing gimmick has sparked quite a reaction among fans.
Here are some of the reactions:
Between July 27 and August 1, fans can enter a draw to win an MiLB Munchie Mitt. Those wishing to register for the sweepstakes can do so on the Minor League Baseball website. A total of five winners will be announced at the end of the month, with each set to receive a custom mitt of their own.
"Please tell me you got your hands on some of these i NEED" - asked a fan.
"This is amazing" - contributed another.
"Take this to Shark Tank, and do it RIGHT now" - was among the proposals.
While a vast majority of the comments beneath the post appeared to be in favor of the Munchie Mitt, not everyone seemed to be onboard. Several comments also poured in, disaparaging the Munchie Mitt. One fan even went so far as to hint that the ploy should be re-packaged as an April Fools joke:
"I would have saved this for an April 1 post"
"Who would even think about spending the money for this?" - quipped another.
"I'll take the chance of spilling my beer" - was a final trolling comment.
MiLB reminds fans of its importance to the baseball world
While MLB action is obviously preferable, many fans discount how exciting Minor League Baseball can be. With players like Spencer Jones, Max Muncy and Joey Votto all competing in MiLB this week, there is proof that MLB-level talent can be found in the minors.
Whether or not the now-famous Munchie Mitt will ever make it to MLB parks, remains to be determined.
