The New York Yankees surrendered the 2024 World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers after expensive errors from Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole and others resulted in a 7-6 loss in Game 5 on Wednesday night. The Yankees held a massive lead on the board until the defensive lapses from their stars allowed the Dodgers to pull off a stunning comeback and claim their 8th Fall Classic title.
The Yankees fans bemoaned the defensive blunders of the team, which ultimately led to their downfall in the World Series.
Following their comprehensive win over the Dodgers the previous night, the Yankees continued their surge on Wednesday evening and raced away to a 5-0 advantage before the end of the third inning. Aaron Judge put his team in front with his first World Series home run, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton also hitting a solo home run each to drive the home team into a commanding lead.
However, it all unraveled very quickly for the Yankees in the top of the fifth inning after a slew of defensive errors across the field.
Aaron Judge made the first error after dropping a routine flyball after being distracted by the Dodgers runner at first base. Shortstop Anthony Volpe was responsible for the next lapse when his miscued throw allowed the visitors to load up the bases. Shortly thereafter, Gerrit Cole had a miscommunication with Anthony Rizzo over a groundball to the first baseman, which ended the shutout by the Yankees.
Eventually, the Dodgers scored five runs in the inning to tie the game, which completely turned around the atmosphere inside Yankee Stadium. The fans blasted their team for the poor defensive effort after the World Series concluded on X, formerly Twitter.
"This is on Rizzo," blamed one fan.
"Can’t make those errors," posted another fan.
"Just unbelievable how often this team suddenly forgets how to play baseball," wrote another fan.
The blame game continued among the Yankees fans on X.
"Judge dropping that ball causes everything after it to even be possible," one fan pointed out.
"Can’t blame anything else but the defense," said another fan.
"Yeah the Yankees deserve to lose this game. What an all-time pathetic way to go out," another fan asked.
The Yankees clinched their first American League pennant after 15 years, but that success will probably not appease the supporters a great deal after their subpar performance in the World Series.
Yankees captain Aaron Judge disappoints in maiden Fall Classic
Despite having an outstanding regular season, hitting more than 50 home runs for the third time in his career, Aaron Judge was a huge letdown for the New York Yankees in the World Series. Judge got his first home run of the Fall Classic on Wednesday night, but it was not enough to keep his team alive as the Los Angeles Dodgers capitalized on his defensive error to produce a superb comeback.
Overall, it was a dismal postseason for Aaron Judge from a personal standpoint, which is a continuation of his previous track record in the playoffs. He batted .184./344/.408 in 14 games during October, with just nine hits and nine RBIs. The Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009, and it will be interesting to see if Judge gets another shot at the championship in his career.
