Ninth inning with one out and nobody on, Francisco Alvarez broke the 3-3 tie with his walk-off home run against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. He struck the pitch from Seranthony Dominguez for a 421 feet blast in the left field.
He was hyped up after crushing the ball as he started rounding up the bases for the win. The Mets won the game 4-3 at Citi Field.
"This is my f***ing s**t," Alvarez said after bursting the home run.
This was the first walk-off hit of Alvarez's career.
More importantly, it was an important win for the Mets, who are in a tight race with the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks for NL wild card spots. The next 11 games would pretty much decide their fate. They have done well in their last four games, winning three of them.
Francisco Alvarez brings home the win over the Orioles
The New York Mets started off well as JD Martinez crushed a two-run homer in the first innings against Orioles starter Trevor Rogers. The Mets added one more run in the fourth on Tyrone Taylor's RBI single, bringing Pete Alonso home to give the Mets a healthy 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, David Peterson was hurling a gem on the other end until the seventh inning, when he balked off a run before allowing Ramon Urias to tie the game with his solo shot. He previously allowed a run on Jackson Holliday's grounder in the fifth inning.
Both bullpens stitched multiple blank innings to reach the ninth, where Alvarez crushed one behind the left field fence to take the game for the Mets.
With the win, the Mets improved to 65-60, while the Orioles dropped to 73-53. Both teams are going for different targets in the lead-up to October. While the Orioles are all but confirmed to claim a spot in the postseason, the Mets are walking a tight rope. The loss will put the Orioles 0.5 games behind the Yankees for the division lead in the AL East.
The two meet again on Tuesday for the second game of the three-game series at Citi Field.
