For Yankees manager Aaron Boone, his recent World Series loss must sting more than most. After weathering loud calls for the termination of his contract after last season, the skipper is once again feeling the wrath of the fanbase.
In the wake of the World Series loss, MLB analyst and superfan Jimmy O'Brien of Jomboy Media took to X. Jomboy posted an excerpt from Joel Sherman's New York Post article highlighting how the Dodgers exploited the Yankees' defensive mismanagement. Predictably, this has sparked rage within the fanbase - directed at the Yankees front office and Aaron Boone.
Sources familiar with the New York Yankees believe that Boone will return to the dugout in 2025. Ahead of the 2022 MLB season, Boone inked a three-year contract with a club option for 2025. Despite carrying the club to the World Series, many fans seem to want Boone gone.
Himself an MLB infielder for 12 seasons, fans are confounded that so many defensive lapses would come under Boone's watch. Sherman's article highlighted messy cutoff throws and poor positional management by the Yankees in the World Series - something the LA Dodgers were all too happy to exploit.
"Again, fire Boone, athleticism over fundamentals and low baseball IQs for some of the players" - spat a fan
"That falls completely on the coaches!" - bemoaned another
"I want @Jomboy to replace Boone" - remarked a fan
The mounting calls for Boone to be canned is indicative of how Yankees fans feel. Last season, the Yankees narrowly edged out the Boston Red Sox in the AL East to avoid their first last-place divisional finish since 1990. Now, after nearly winning the World Series, calls for Aaron Boone to be discarded appear to be even more ferocious and coordinated.
"I hope Hal, Cash, and Boone read this article and really feel shame for how they conduct their organization" - was a harsh condemnation from a fan
"A fundamentally bad team" - claimed another
"Aaron Boone, 3 year extension when?" - was a final sarcastic jab
MLB scouts roundly condemn Aaron Boone's management of Game 5
Although Sherman's piece covered a lot of ground, another New York Post article by Jon Heyman focused on Boone's reluctance to call on Luke Weaver in the eighth, and the manager's failure to visit the mound during the five-run fifth inning. As an unnamed AL scout told Heyman:
"The Yankees played really bad in this series, probably the worst they played all season.”
While it looks as though Boone will be back in 2025, Game 5 of the 2024 World Series may haunt him forever.
