The New York Mets have DFA'd relief pitcher Jorge Lopez after his controversial post-game interview following his ejection from the game against the LA Dodgers on Wednesday. MLB broadcaster Chris Rose from the Chris Rose Sports podcast shed light on the incident that panned out at Citi Field in his latest episode.
The Mets reliever was misheard labeling the Mets as the "worst team in MLB" during his post-game interview on Wednesday. Discussing the Lopez situation following the Mets DFA decision, Rose said:
"So, after that Jorge Lopez was DFA'd. This is an organizational failure on many levels. The Mets should have put an interpreter right next to him. Jorge Lopez as we just heard in that soundbite does speak english but as you mentioned it is his second language."
He continued by adding:
"And when we are getting into sommething that's more than.. 'Hey, did you throw a slider there? Did you miss on your fastball?' Let's make sure that he is as protected as he can be."
Chris Rose further talked about the mental and family stress that Lopez has been dealing with since last year, as he said:
"The other side of this is that when Jorge Lopez was with the Twins last year, he was put on a disabled list, the mental health list. If you do a little more deep diving you understand that he has got a son who is on a transplant list."
"So, he is dealing with a very serious health issue. I am not saying that that excuses you being unprofessional becasue people do have to show up to work."
Finally, Rose talked about how the media or the fans shouldn't be blowing things out of proportion and instead show some empathy towards the tainted MLB All-Star pitcher, as he said:
"And we all have to deal with stuff but I am just saying that sometimes let's take a big step back here and really look at what is going on in his [Lopez] life and how people can help other people instead of just saying 'Haha! did you see what Jorge Lopez did?' Like, I think we need to take a step back."
Mets reliever Jorge Lopez clarified his erratic comments from Wednesday
Jorge Lopez was initially heard saying the words "worst team" in his comments on Wednesday. Later on, he justified his remarks by stating that the words were directed at himself, as he called himself the "worst teammate" in the entire league for his behavior during the Dodgers game.
"During that interview, I spoke candidly about my frustrations with my personal performance and how I felt it made me ‘the worst teammate in the entire league.' Unfortunately, my efforts to address the media in English created some confusion and generated headlines that do not reflect what I was trying to express," Lopez calrified via his Instagram handle
Lopez will earn the guaranteed sum of $2 million on his one-year contract with the NYM, but his future in the MLB with the Mets is still uncertain, as they can either release or trade the reliever or send him outright to the minors.
