While several prominent names have found new teams in the offseason over the last few weeks, one of the biggest names in free agency, Pete Alonso, remains without a team.

The four-time All-Star has been in talks with his former team, the New York Mets, for a return to Citi Field, but negotiations have reportedly stalled despite the Mets reportedly offering $90 million over three years to Pete Alonso.

Amid the interest from Mets in their former first baseman, NL West team the San Francisco Giants, who missed out on Corbin Burnes earlier this week, have emerged as a potential suitor for Alonso.

While it's uncertain at this point if the Giants will table an offer for Alonso, Mets pundit and podcaster Ryan Finkelstein believes it's good for the All-Star slugger's free agency as it might instigate New York into action.

On his "Locked On Mets," podcast, Finkelstein said (9:30 onwards):

"if you looked at the market outside of maybe signing Jack Flaherty as the pivot off Corbin Burnes, the best free agent that fits needs might just be Pete Alonso. He would give the Giants the type of power that they desperately need in the middle of their lineup.
"They're showing some interest now. Does that mean that Pete Alonso wants to play for the Giants? Not necessarily but this is what Scott Boras and Pete Alonso need to get the offer they want from the New York Mets."

Mets pundit lays out the scenario where the Giants can sway Pete Alonso

According to reports, Pete Alonso's agent Scott Boras is seeking a contract worth around $200 million contract for his client and are unlikely to budge on the Mets $90 million offer.

However, Ryan Finkelstein feels if the Giants offered Alonso a 6-7 year deal, similar to Matt Chapman and Willy Adames, the Mets might increase their offer with a higher AAV for Alonso.

He added:

"It feels like if it's a short-term deal, the Mets could really blow any team out of the water, especially if they already have a deal that would pay Pete, $30 million per season. I just don't see another team getting close to that. I really don't but I think where the Giants could get in the mix is they can make it uncomfortable for the Mets by going to a certain amount of years to sign Pete Alonso."

The Giants have the financial prowess to go big on Pete Alonso. However, it remains to be seen if they are willing to agree to Scott Boras's demands of a mega deal.
