Fans reacted as New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso announced his participation in the upcoming All-Star Home-Run Derby 2024, which will be held at Globe Life Field on July 15.
This will be Alonso's fifth time participating in the contest and he is looking forward to earning his third title and tying Ken Griffey Jr.’s record of three Derby titles (1994, ‘98 and ‘99) since the competition began in 1985.
Alonso announced his participation through a post on social media:
"I am so honored to be selected as an All-Star and represent the @Mets! I’m excited to announce that I will participate in the Home Run Derby!!! #LFGM," he wrote in caption.
Fans on the internet were elated to learn about his participation and shared their positive affirmations for him.
"This is his World Series," one fan remarked.
"Bro is about to go win it again," another wrote.
"I’m betting on Pete again 🤷♂️" one fan added.
Some fans used this opportunity to throw shade at Alonso for his disappointing performance this year for the New York Mets.
"Yeah...I'm a Mets fan, but Pete Alonso, SO FAR, is having a terribly disappointing season for a guy playing for the most important contract of his career, next year. He hasn't done a good job selling himself, folks, and the Home Run Derby is meaningless at this point," one fan remarked.
"How about hitting above.200 for the Mets!!" another added.
Some expected a good competition at the Derby.
"This years home run derby gonna be fire," a fan quipped.
So far, the Orioles' Gunnar Henderson, the Phillies' Alec Bohm and Alonso have confirmed their participation.
Pete Alonso's previous Home Run Derby results
The Mets first baseman has been a regular in the past five Home Run Derby contests. In his rookie year (2019), Pete Alonso declared for the contest and faced fierce competition from Toronto Blue Jays' Vladimir Gurrero Jr. Ultimately, the former came out on top.
Derby was played in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 outbreak and in 2021, Alonso again put on a show, winning the contest while putting up 23 home runs in the final round and 74 homers overall.
The 29-year-old participated in 2022 and 2023 but fell short of the title. Juan Soto won the contest in 2022, while Guerrero Jr. won it in 2023.
