Mookie Betts made a catch on the opening batter for the New York Yankees, but a fan tried to interfere. When Gleyber Torres hit a foul fly ball into the corner, Betts ranged over to make the play at the wall. As he did, two fans tried to secure the ball, even going so far as to attempt to open Betts' glove to remove it/

When the ball popped out, an incensed Betts turned to the umpires and gestured wildly that the fans had removed the ball from his glove. The umpires saw the whole incident and ruled it out. The fans were eventually ejected in one of the wildest cases of fan interference in baseball history.

During Wednesday's episode of the "Baseball Today," former Minnesota Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe said (23:30):

"I don't think they should be banned for life ... a year ban ... This is so stupid ... I can see how you think that's funny ... This idiot in the sunglasses ... I hated it. Don't touch players."

Plouffe said the fan had the opportunity to knock the ball away, which would likely have still been deemed fan interference, rather than trying to take it out of Betts' glove.

"Did you see what Tommy Pham said? He was doing a live vlog or something... It wouldn't have ended okay for those guys. Can you imagine? Tommy Pham would've gone into the stands and grabbed both of them by their shirts and brought them onto the field," Plouffe added. (25:45)

Mookie Betts addressed fan interference: "It's irrelevant. We lost.":

After the game, which saw the Yankees outscore the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 following the fan interference, Mookie Betts wasn't interested in discussing the incident. His focus was on the loss.

Betts said after the game:

"It's irrelevant. We lost. No, I didn't even know he grabbed my hand. When it comes to the person in black, we lost. It's irrelevant. It doesn't matter. We lost. It's irrelevant. I'm fine, he's fine. Everything's cool. We lost the game, that's what I'm kind of focused on."

Betts and the Dodgers will try to close things out in Game 5 against the Yankees on Wednesday.
