Former Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer has reportedly contracted cholera. Bauer has been playing in the Mexican League for the past year, where he has been a star pitcher after failing to get an MLB contract.
MLB journalist Christopher Boan said on Twitter that Bauer is suffering from a rare illness.
"Some MLB news I never expected to break: A source in Trevor Bauer's camp told me last night that he's dealing with what the source believed was a case of cholera in Mexico," Boan reported.
Cholera is a disease characterized by acute diarrhea caused by contaminated water. It's not a common disease and is usually found in unsanitary regions, however, it can prove to be fatal if left untreated.
This season, Bauer has a 10-0 record with a 1.78 ERA. In a total of 81 innings, he has struck out 117 hitters.
Trevor Bauer talks about Paul Skenes's unique warmup routine
Pittsburgh's rookie pitcher, Paul Skenes, has taken the league by storm with his fastball. His pregame routine, consisting of unconventional stretches and throws, has drawn comparisons to Trevor Bauer.
Veteran coach Craig Noto started the debate on social media. He compared Skenes' warmup with Bauer's well-known and equally unconventional routine. However, he pointed out that while Skenes is liked for these routines, Bauer had to face backlash.
The former Dodgers pitcher responded to the statement.
“The first one through the door takes all the fire but makes it much easier for everyone behind him to enter," Bauer said.
Bauer has had a history of clashes with his coaches and teammates since high school. Conversely, Skenes has seamlessly integrated into the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, establishing himself as a well-liked teammate.
