Tyler Skaggs wrongful death case update: Mike Trout set for court visit as witness as judge denies postponement

On July 1, 2019, Mike Trout's teammate, Tyler Skaggs tragically passed away. He was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Texas as the Los Angeles Angels had a road series against the Texas Rangers.

A medical examiner ruled a mix of fentanyl, oxycodone, and alcohol played a role in the pitcher's death. The Skaggs; family set a lawsuit in motion, suing the Halos' organization, alongside a public relations employee named Eric Kay and Kay's former boss, Tim Mead.

The lawsuit was set in motion over three years ago, and the Halos tried to postpone the April 7 trial. However, a judge denied that postponement, and the two sides will meet in court on Jan. 10.

In 2022, Kay was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison. He was found to be the person who regularly provided pills to Skaggs and other MLB players.

Trout is one of the players expected to appear in court at the beginning of the year. He will stand in front of a judge on January 15, including three other Angels employees.

Mike Trout was a close friend of Tyler Skaggs. The two were drafted just 15 spots apart during the 2009 MLB Draft and nearly came up to the big leagues at the same time. Trout debuted in 2011 while Skaggs made his during the 2012 season.

Being so close to Skaggs, Trout is expected to give the judge more insight into their relationship. He is also expected to be asked about the culture inside the Angels clubhouse.

Owner Arte Moreno and chairman Dennis Kuhl will have to respond to subpoenas. The subpoenas are to answer questions about specific documentation located on their cell phones.
