Dustin May, the right-handed pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been ruled out for the 2024 season. On Saturday, the Dodgers announced that the 26-year-old will not play any part this year after undergoing surgery for a torn esophagus.

Baseball fans on social media seemed somewhat bewildered by the peculiar nature of the ailment that May suffered. Nevertheless, many expressed their sympathies for the player since he has spent a vast portion of his career on the treatment table.

Despite making his MLB debut in 2019, Dustin May has played fewer than 50 games in his career due to recurring injuries. He has not pitched for the Dodgers since May 2023, after undergoing surgery on his flexor tendon and a second Tommy John procedure for a UCL strain on his right elbow. He was set for minor-league rehab assignments in the near future, but that is no longer possible.

According to an official statement from the Dodgers, May experienced a sudden pain in his throat and stomach during a dinner on Wednesday. Upon consulting the medical staff the following day, a tear was discovered in his throat, and surgery was required on the esophagus. He is expected to make a complete recovery from the issue, but he will not be taking the mound this year.

"Unluckiest Dodger ever, Get well soon Dustin. 2025 is your year." said one fan.

"This dude can't even catch a break with injuries off the field, gotta feel bad," another one said.

A few people also wondered how the injury to Dustin May could have occurred.

"How do you even tear your esophagus," one fan said.
"Never heard of someone tearing their esophagus, hope he’s alright," expressed another fan.
"Again, how does someone get a torn esophagus?" asked another one.

Meanwhile, having Dustin May sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 season adds to the growing list of problems that the Dodgers have at the moment.

Even though the Los Angeles Dodgers have an exceptionally deep starting rotation, it has been stretched thin by injuries recently. At present, the Dodgers have seven starting pitchers on the IL, including Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler.

The return of Dustin May was expected to provide some cover for the rotation in the latter months of the season. May has a 12-9 record in the major leagues with a 3.10 ERA, and he is set to become a free agent at the end of the next season.

On the other hand, the Dodgers are currently going through their worst run with a 4-7 record since June 30, and they have lost four of the previous five games.
