The St. Louis Cardinals, with a 65-66 record, sit third in the NL Central and are likely to miss the postseason. However, in a surprising move, the Cardinals sought help from rapper Yung Gravy.
On Thursday, the Cardinals signed Gravy to a one-day contract ahead of their series finale against the San Diego Padres at Busch Stadium. The decision made team fans doubt the club’s seriousness about competing for a playoff spot.
Cardinals fans voiced their criticism about the team’s unexpected step.
Used to be a serious franchise,” a fan replied.
“This is how low we’ve fallen cardinals fans.,” a fan tweeted.
“No one wants to see that”, A fan commented.
While most fans trolled the Cardinals for signing Yung Gravy, a few responded with light-hearted humor.
"Best player on the roster," a fan replied.
"Nice 6'8 prospect for the organization," a fan commented.
"This is perfect Deal or lol," a fan tweeted.
Although Gravy didn’t entertain fans with his baseball skills, he certainly has with his latest tour - the Grits and Gravy Tour 2024, promoting his new album - Clementine.
Why did the Cardinals sign Yung Gravy?
The story goes back to May 31, when podcaster Bobbi Althoff asked Yung Gravy if he had played for St. Louis. The rapper wore a Cardinals jersey during the podcast. Gravy said he'd never suited up for the franchise. Since then, however, he has tried to make his dream of playing in the MLB come true.
On TikTok, he asked, “If there are any teams out there who would be willing to have Yung Gravy." Shortly after the question went viral, MLB Tonight host and St. Louis Cardinals commentator Greg Amsinger stated that the Cardinals had signed the 28-year-old.
On Thursday, he officially received the contract and fulfilled his long-time wish.
