When it comes to controversy, few professional athletes do it like Jose Canseco. Although the six-time All-Star has not played in MLB for over two decades, he is never far from stoking the flames of dissension.
In the late hours of Thursday, Canseco took to X to share a rather fiery opinion. The 60-year-old slammed America's school system for "creating slaves and idiots on purpose" before urging his followers to "wake the f--- up"
"Our school system is creating slaves and idiots on purpose..wake the fuck up" - Jose Canseco
While no context was provided for his hot take, the four-time Silver Slugger sparked controversy with his profane comments. Canseco, who won both the Rookie of the Year and the MVP Award as a member of the Oakland Athletics in the 1980s, has often used Twitter/X as a vehicle to spread his commentary.
In 2013, Jose Canseco was named as a suspect in a rape case in Las Vegas. Instead of immediately seeking legal counsel, Canseco broke the news to the public on Twitter, and proceeded to post pictures and information about the woman who accused him.
In 2018, Canseco tweeted at then-US President Donald Trump, comically volunteering to be the next White House Chief of Staff. Moreover, Canseco referred to the former Commander-in-Chief of "looking more like a Twinkie everyday."
"Hey little buddy @RealDonaldTrump u need a bash brother for Chief if Staff. Got a secret reorg plan already. Also worried about you looking more like a Twinkie everyday. I will buff you up daily workouts. DM me." - Jose Canseco
The 1984 MiLB player of the year, Canseco made his MLB debut for the A's in 1985, and would go on to win the Rookie of the Year and MVP Awards for the team in 1986 and 1988 respectively. A known consumer of steroids throughout his time in MLB, Canseco would play for a variety of teams before retiring as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 2001.
Jose Canseco is no stranger to politics
Despite his criticism of former President , Canseco took to X in the wake of the attempt on Trump's life last weekend during a rally in Pennsylvania. Canseco wrote:
"We need to unite as a country now more than ever"
Although entertaining, a coherent agenda seems to be lacking from Canseco's social media commentary. Perhaps he will elaborate on his comment about schools in the coming days.
