Gleyber Torres is going through a tough season in 2024, and it seems to have gone even worse on Friday night. The New York Yankees second baseman was seen in an animated discussion with his manager Aaron Boone after he was taken out of the game.

Boone's decision is presumed to be a disciplinary one for a lack of hustle from Torres when he was at the plate earlier in the game. YES Network posted a video clip of the conversation that took place between Boone and Torres on X:

The Yankees were at home against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday for the first game of a three-game series between the American League East rivals.

The Blue Jays had raced into an early three-run lead in the first inning, although the Yankees responded quickly to make it a one-run game. But the visitors moved 7-2 in front by the time Boone and Torres had their conversation in the dugout.

At the start of the fifth inning, Torres walked up to Boone standing in his usual spot at the dugout entrance and seemingly enquired the reasons for being taken out of the game.

What was said between the pair is unclear, but Torres was seemingly not pleased by the decision, while Boone seemed unimpressed with his explanations. The clip showed the probable reason for his removal from the game.

In the bottom of the second inning, Gleyber Torres came up to the plate with the bases empty and one out. The 27-year-old drilled a hard line drive to left field with an exit velocity of 110.2 mph, but it didn't go out of the park for a home run. The ball cannoned off the left-field fence straight on to the hands of the outfielder, who made a quick throw to second base and limited Torres to just a single.

Gleyber Torres felt he had hit the ball hard enough to go out for a home run. He almost stood still at the plate, admiring his own shot and didn't rush out of the box quickly. By the time he realized the ball had come back off the left-field fence, it was too late for him to convert it into an extra-base hit.

Late on in the inning, Anthony Volpe hit a double down the left-field line, and the Yankees third-base coach sent Gleyber Torres forward to score the game-tying run, but he was thrown out at home plate. Judging by his reaction, Boone felt that the lack of hustle from Torres cost the Yankees a precious run.

Removing Gleyber Torres was a disciplinary decision, not due to injury

It was initially unclear why Gleyber Torres was removed from the game after four innings by Aaron Boone, considering the timing of the decision.

Torres had made the baserunning error in the second inning but had also made a diving play in the third, which may have caused an injury. In truth, the decision was delayed because Torres hadn't returned to the dugout during that time.

“If he’s taken out for not running on that line drive to left, and then that cost them a run, you can say well, why didn’t he take him out in the third,? YES announcer Michael Kay said on air. "Well, he probably just went right to second base after being thrown out. This is probably the first time he had a chance to talk to him."

The New York Yankees eventually lost 8-5 to the Toronto Blue Jays. It will be interesting to see if Gleyber Torres starts when the two teams meet again at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
