Ronald Acuna Jr. and his younger brother Luisangel Acuna swapped jerseys before the Braves and Mets' latest meeting. Ronald plays for Atlanta, and his sibling plays for New York. The Mets hold a 1.5-game lead over their divison rival in the NL Wild Card standings.
At the start of the season, no one would have expected that Luisangel would be the lone Acuna vying for playoff time on the MLB diamond. But that is a reality following the Braves All-Star's season-ending injury and the Mets rookie's big league callup.
Ronald Acuna Jr. tore his ACL in May. The outfielder is expected to return next season. When the injury occured, his 22-year-old brother was making waves in Triple-A.
However, following Jeff McNeil's and Francisco Lindor's injuries, Luisangel was asked to start at shortstop for NYM. In nine MLB games, he is batting .379 with an OPS of 1.228. He has become an important part of the lineup that will face the Braves over the next three days.
The Acuna brothers exchanged jerseys ahead of the series in a heartwarming display.
