Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman is not having the best of days, getting drilled on the head the other day. On Thursday, he was ejected in the fourth inning of the game against the Kansas City Royals at Minute Maid Park.
Making his second plate appearance, Bregman was unhappy straightaway after Alex Tosi, the home plate umpire, misjudged a dying sinker for a strike. The second pitch was in the zone, with Bregman down 0-2 in the count. The third pitch was borderline but seemed outside. Nonetheless, it was called for strike three, leaving Bregman disappointed.
While on his way back, he said something to Tosi, which resulted in his ejection. Manager Joe Espada quickly rushed to calm Bregman down and had a chat with Tosi. Here's the video of Bregman's ejection:
The next inning, Shay Whitcomb took over third base, replacing Alex Bregman.
Astros announcer riled up after quick Alex Bregman ejection
There were a lot of questionable calls throughout the night by Alex Tosi. But the one that got Space City Home Network Broadcast Geoff Blum riled up was the seemingly unwarranted ejection of Alex Bregman.
"He just threw him out. There is no reason to call Alex and throw him out on that," Blum said.
"He walked right past Alex Tosi and said, 'That zone was bad.' If anybody in the league knows the strike zone is him, but Alex Tosi took it upon himself to throw out the Astros' All-Star third baseman and made it about him instead of the game."
Leah Vann of Chron made a side-by-side comparison of two pitches spotted around the same place, with one being called strike, while the other was ball. The first was Alex Bregman's strikeout pitch by Brady Singer, while the other was the Astros ace Hunter Brown's pitch to the Royals' Maikel Garcia.
Nonetheless, the Astros went on to win 6-3. They scored in bundle with two runs in the fifth inning and four in the eighth inning. Jason Heyward, who just joined the Astros roster, made an impact straightaway, contributing with two RBIs in the win.
