On Tuesday night, Bryce Harper featured in the eighth All-Star Game of his career at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The Philadelphia Phillies captain was one of the most sought-after players for reporters on Media Day the previous evening.
In answer to one of their questions, Harper named his Mount Rushmore of two first basemen and two outfielders, which contained one unforgettable player. A video clip was posted on X by the Youtube channel Talkin' Baseball, which showed the Phillies superstar giving his answer to a reporter's query.
Here's the video:
In the video, Bryce Harper is seated at his designated booth on the field while taking questions from the media in front of him.
One of the questions asked him to name his Mt. Rushmore, comprising two first basemen and two outfielders, the two positions on the field Harper has played during his career.
With batting an eyelid, Bryce Harper named Barry Bonds at left field. However, he struggled for a while about the next. Eventually, he gave up and laughingly replied that he would choose Bonds for all the spots.
Bryce Harper idolized Barry Bonds as a youngster
Barry Bonds is often regarded as the greatest baseball player in the history of the game. He's the all-time home run champion with 762 and has also been MVP a record seven times.
Bonds has 14 All-Star appearances, 12 Silver Sluggers, eight Gold Gloves and two batting titles. He earned 2558 walks in his career, of which 688 were handed intentionally, with both figures being MLB records as well.
In 2016, Bryce Harper was the hottest player in the MLB after winning the first of his two MVP awards the previous season. At the time, a 23-year-old Harper talked about how he idolized Barry Bonds when he was younger and the massive respect he holds for him.
“He’s the greatest hitter on the planet,” Harper said. “The guy had 2,900 and something hits, 500-500 guy. There’s nobody better than that guy in this game, and that’s something I was able to watch when I was younger, and I try to take things from what he did with his approach, but he’s the greatest player I can think of from when I was growing up playing and watching," Bryce Harper had said.
“I’m just trying to take it day by day and see what I can do. He’s got seven MVPs, however many Gold Gloves. I can keep going on and on about how good he was. That’s somebody you look up to definitely in the way he played and the things he did in the box. Hopefully I can learn some things from him as well, and we’ll see what happens.”
Since bursting onto the MLB, Harper has long been touted as one of the few players who might get close to Barry Bonds' home run record. At the moment, Harper has 327, which puts him just around the halfway mark.
